Milan, Italy Mini Album

Monday, December 2, 2019

Happy holidays! I'm back with a new mini album to share with you using the festive Together for Christmas holiday collection from Pink Paislee!
Check out this video flip through to see what this album looks like from cover-to-cover:
To start, I designed an Ornaments Mini Album cut file. The cut file includes 7 intricate ornaments and 7 solid pieces for backing. I die cut the 7 intricate ornaments from textured white cardstock by American Crafts (my cardstock of choice for die cutting - it cuts like butter!) using a Silhouette Cameo 3 and the 7 solid pieces from 7 of the coordinating solid colors in the Together for Christmas Project Pad. In Silhouette Studio I then flipped the 7 solid ornaments horizontally and cut them out once more from patterned papers. Next I sandwiched each ornament together: I used spray adhesive to attach the white cardstock ornaments to the fronts and the patterned paper ornaments to the backs of the solid colored paper ornaments. I machine stitched around the outer edge of each ornament with a Brother sewing machine to keep all the layers together permanently and add some nice texture. With the base of the mini album finished, it's time for decorating!
I decided to make this mini album about our trip to Milan, Italy over the holidays back in 2016. I printed my photos at home and trimmed them out leaving a white border which creates contrast. I have a tutorial sharing how I print small photos here. Before I started embellishing I had my Silhouette Cameo 3 cut out a bunch of flowers and ornaments from the patterned papers using the PixScan feature. I have a tutorial for using the PixScan mat here. It saves so much time instead of spending hours fussy cutting, the machine cuts out all the images in minutes! Here are the fronts of all the finished ornaments:
For the title page I added a dimensional wreath sticker to the center. I tucked one of the florals my Cameo cut out under the top along with a snowflake sticker. I layered a gold "December" sticker across the front at an angle and glued five gold sequins across the top. I cut out letters ransom-style from extra die cuts and stickers in the collection to spell " in Milan" and typed "italy" on my We R Memory Keepers Typecast Typewriter. I glued the these pieces inside the wreath and added a star sequin to finish.
On the back of each ornament is where I added journaling. I copied and pasted our blog post recap about Milan into a new word document, deleted parts I didn't need to include, changed the font to Remington Noiseless at size 8, printed it out, trimmed it into strips to fit the shape of the intended space, and used liquid glue to adhere the strips in place. A simple pinecone sticker adorns the bottom point.
On the 2nd ornament I layered embellishments on the left side: a floral die cut, pinecone die cut, layered acorn sticker, a trio of gold star stickers, puffy candy sticker, and gold puffy branch (all from the Together for Christmas collection). As always when I make mini albums documenting vacations, I have way more photos than can really fit so I have to find creative solutions to add more. In this instance I attached a trio of photos together with washi tape from my stash and zigzag stitching and then added velcro dots to the back so it can be taken out and put back neatly.
I embellished the photo strip minimally with a few sentiment stickers, journaling strip captions, and I stapled a transparency snowflake to the top for easier accessibility. Here you can see the velcro dots where the folded up photos stick to.
On the back of this ornament I added more journaling strips and a branch sticker.
On the 3rd ornament I did some chunky layering with various embellishments from the Together for Christmas collection and tucked a photo into the left side. Jane has always loved birds so I sneak them in wherever I can when it's a photo featuring her.
On the back of this ornament I added five 1" photos as well as journaling strips. Milan is known for its fashion so I had to document about our experience window shopping! This was another instance where I needed to find a solution to tell more stories with photos. By printing them small I was able to add five pictures and tell the story on the back of an ornament.
The 4th ornament features more clusters of embellishments and a large photo of Fox & Jane. It's one of my very favorite photos of them. This is when they were starting to become the best of friends and it was so heartwarming. Definitely deserved its own page! Notice I snuck another bird in too :)
By the time I'd finished the fronts of the ornaments I still had a lot of favorite photos I wasn't able to include. I wasn't planning on adding photos to the backs but then I thought, why not? So I added this photo from atop the Duomo amid all the hundreds of spires along with the printed journaling strips about it. For embellishment I cut a poinsettia sticker in half and placed the halves above and below the journaling and curved a puffy gold "peace" sticker along the bottom.
This 5th ornament page includes another option for adding more than one photo: I layered three photos together and machine stitched along the top to create flip-ups. On the background I created a cluster of die cuts and stickers and added a row of gold sequins along the bottom. To help make flipping up the photos a bit easier I stapled a transparent snowflake on the top two photos.
Here is a look at the other photos stitched together:
The back of the 5th ornament tells the story of the whole reason we went to Milan: to see The Last Supper.
My original mini album cut file didn't include this 6th star shaped page, but I needed another place for photos so I designed a star ornament in the same style as the other pages, repeated the process of backing and stitching around the edges, and voila - I had another page for photos! A lot more photos! Because I made a pocket to hold them all. I trimmed down one of the label die cuts, stitched around the left, bottom, and right edges, and tucked photos inside. Actually, I kind of made a mini album inside this mini album! Check it out:
I backed each 2" square photo with patterned paper, added printed/trimmed captions, and a sticker or two for embellishment. I stacked all the photos together and then punched a small hole with a Crop-A-Dile through the top left corner and slid them onto a tiny copper binder ring to hold them all together.
Here are the 8 photos included the mini-mini album:
And the backs with the patterned papers, stickers, and captions:
The 7th and last page includes more of the same - layers of embellishments and clusters along with two final photos. By using the same collection and style of embellishing, the album is cohesive and fun to flip through.
On the back I added a flower, gold "memories" sticker tucked above a gold puffy "together" sticker. And that's it!
By using a cut file as the base of the mini album and sticking with one collection this album came together quickly and easily. I would guess it took about 8 hours spread over the course of 4 days to complete. And now we have a memorable time in our lives documented forever! Thanks so much for stopping by, let me know if you have any questions and see you again soon!

November 2019 Highlights

Sunday, December 1, 2019

November FLEW right by! And now it's December! How?! Just like this entire year, this month was a blur and here are a few highlights:

My new rule is it's okay to start decorating for Christmas once it starts snowing and you may recall from my October 2019 Highlights, that that happened mid-October. Don't worry, I didn't put up the Christmas tree before even Halloween lol, but not long after we busted 'em out! Bring on all the colors of Christmas.
I just liked this light coming through the windows this one morning while eating breakfast with Chris.
I moved this three-tiered basket full of mini albums to a different spot in my scrap room.
A box with some of my next collection with Pink Paislee arrived!! Sneaks will start late December I believe so keep your eyes peeled! The full reveal will be in January at Creativation. Can't wait!
November was a prolific crafty month for me! From top left to bottom right: Honfleur, France Mini Album // Sketch & Stitch Sugar Skull Layout // Beautifall Layout // Cut File Card Trio // Mini Envelopes Layout // Wonder Layout. I also made another mini album which will be up here tomorrow.
My favorite burger place, Crave, came out with the most divine pumpkin shake with a whole slice of pumpkin pie in it. So so so so yummy. Back on the wagon tomorrow, ha!
Friends + Legos = winning combo!
I found these cute wooden sleds at the dollar spot in Target and first thought they'd make excellent & festive storage for December Daily supplies, then I thought I'd turn one into a MemoryDex for my December Daily, but I have no idea where I'd store it, so they will be used to hold supplies :) My MemoryDex this year will be a handmade mini album focused on my 25 Days of Christmas Cut Files (see the last photo in this blog post for more info).
Paula posted this image on her instagram. It's an advent calendar also from Target filled with Christmas supplies. I immediately grabbed one. How cute AND functional!!

For Activity Days we made these easy, colorful leaf wreaths.
Here is Jane's completed wreath with things she's grateful for written on the leaves. Adorbs.
I posted this across social media: "Throwing it back this Thursday to a very special time in my life. When I was 16 years old my parents wanted me to get a job so my mom and I drove around Redmond, Washington and picked up applications to Safeway, Party City, and Hallmark. Then we went into a little scrapbook store called Yesterdays Scrapbooking & Stuff. Truth be told I kind of rolled my eyes because I thought scrapbooking was something only old ladies did (I know I'm sorry!!!). They didn't even have any applications, they just wrote down my name and phone number. Imagine my surprise when they called me in for an interview! During the interview we just clicked and I was hired. The very first time I put photos and stickers together on pretty patterned papers I was hooked. That was over 18 years ago now! So much of my life has revolved around scrapbooking, I wonder what it would be like if I had not gotten that job? One day literally changed the course of my life! And I'm so thankful! I still keep the business card up in my Happy Scrappy Place to remind me of how lucky I was to work at this store. Check out 16-year-old Paige holding a little booklet of Making Memories rub-on letters - who remembers those?!"
JOEY! He's so cute.
I flew down to Texas and taught three classes at Little Craft Place including coptic bookbinding where at the end we took this picture of all the finished books lined up. Recap coming soon!
When Chris brings Triscuits & cheese up to bed Joey and Rachel immediately follow and expect some tidbits. They can smell it from a mile away!
We saw Frozen 2 with some of the Evans family. I absolutely LOVED it! More so than the first one which hardly ever happens! Love that I can listen to the catchy soundtrack on Amazon Music.
Malalam! This room is calling your name!
I brought Rachel the cat, Phoebe the bunny, and Monica the guinea pig (just missing Joey the dog and Star the fish which can't leave his tank haha) into this room to let loose and run around. They're all so cute.
This view of Highlands Ranch never gets old and always looks beautifully different.
It snowed.
A whole bunch.
Free cut files in my Facebook Group - Happy Scrappy Place!

We all watched Klaus together on Netlix - even the dog and cat joined in on the fun! I LOVED it! Yay for good movies! Speaking of movies, I also took myself to Charlie's Angels which was entertaining enough and Doctor Sleep which was so bad it makes me never want to see a movie ever again... That didn't last long though because I saw Frozen the next weekend ;)
We went to Utah for Thanksgiving which was a blast.

Utah for Thanksgiving

When my parents told me they were driving from Seattle to Utah for Thanksgiving we decided to drive over too! We kept an eye on the weather and it kept going back and forth between sun and snow, so we just went for it. Wednesday after Chris got home from work we packed up and headed out! We stopped halfway in Grand Junction for the night and then woke up at 4:44am the next morning to finish the drive to good ol' Provo, Utah.

When I started this here blog back in 2008, Chris and I were newlyweds living in our very first apartment in Provo. I was born in Provo. We still have lots of family in Provo. So Provo is basically an awesome place :)

We stayed with my Taylor grandparents: Grandpa John and Grandma Cathie - my dad's parents. My Grandma Cathie is such a classy, elegant woman with an eye for place settings. I've always been envious of her plate collections! These floral blue Wedgewood dishes are no exception.
Jane and Fox getting to know their Great Grandma Cathie. My middle name before I was married was Catherine after her. Jane's middle name is Catherine after her. Sometimes, when I was little and people would ask me my name, I'd say Cat or Catherine :)
Thanksgiving morning my parents drove up to Salt Lake City and picked up my mom's mom, Grandma Doris. We got a four-generation photo which I will always treasure. And Gypsy the dog made the cut.
My Uncle David (my dad's brother) and Aunt Anissa cooked the entire Thanksgiving feast. They brought their three kids who are my cousins but are closer in age to Fox and Jane. Jane and Naomi played and played and played and it reminded me of playing with my cousins when I would come to Utah and visit them in Salt Lake City growing up.
On Black Friday we skipped the commercialism and headed to BYU - GO COUGS!
In the basement of the Wilkinson Center is a photo of my Great Grandma Celestia - Fox & Jane's Great-Great-Grandma. She's the lovely lady front and center in the photo below. The Taylor family roots go way back in Provo.
We went to the BYU Bookstore which has been thoroughly upgraded since Chris and I went here for college from 2003-2008.

Mmmmm candy.
We pointed out all of the buildings and Fox even said, and I quote, "You've encouraged me that I want to go to BYU!" We can only hope!
This cookies'n'cream milk from the vending machine in the HBLL (Harold B Lee Library) is where it's at. Floods of memories! That was back when I could eat anything I wanted and not gain an ounce lol.

Then we walked over the Museum of Art (or, MOA) which is where Chris and I met on January 22nd 2004. There was an AMAZING string installation in the ceiling.
We found the classroom and the very chairs where we first met nearly 16 years ago and told the kids if it weren't for this room they wouldn't be here.
We spent a few minutes looking at the various artworks and this rainbow marked scripture set caught my eye.
One more picture of this string art because I can't get over how cool it is.
I hope this will be Fox's building some day!
Then we walked over to J Dawgs - the best hot dogs in the world, I kid you not.

Holy tons of snow. So much snow. It snowed practically all day every day we were there. Makes for pretty pictures!
We weathered the weather and got lunch at one of our favorite joints called Burger Supreme. Still tastes good!
A few hours later we hopped back in the car and drove to the BYU Creamery On Ninth for some epic ice cream. It's all about the food while on vacation right?!
The next morning we drove back home. Short and sweet trip!
What should have been an 8 hour road trip turned into 11 because of bad weather in the Rocky Mountains, but we made it back home safe and sound and the trip was totally worth it. I loved spending Thanksgiving with so much of my immediate and extended family, re-visiting where Chris and I began, walking around our old stomping grounds, and reliving lots of good memories.
Happy Thanksgiving 2019!
